Deaf Overcoming Violence through Empowerment (DOVE) is the only agency in the state of Colorado that provides direct services to Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, and Hard of Hearing (DDBDDHH) survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other forms of abuse. DOVE Program Director, Avi Haimowitz, will share information about the unique language and culture tied to the DDBDDHH community, and how those factor into a DDBDDH person’s experience of surviving abuse. She will describe common barriers that DDBDDHH survivors face when seeking support, and how these barriers contribute to additional layers of trauma and revictimization. No service provider wants or intends to revictimize a survivor of abuse; this webinar will provide participants with the necessary support to ensure that they are well-equipped to support others. Avi will review the legal rights of DDBDDHH individuals, and best practices for providing sensitive and culturally affirmative services to this population.
